Not because of some new and innovative ideas that were being brought to the table, but because it felt like Sonic Frontiers was somehow pulling from countless inspirations that I just so happen to adore on an atomic level.

Despite mixed reception, I was drawn to what I was seeing. My excitement only grew as the first gameplay footage and hands-on impressions trickled out over the summer. Something about the clear and obvious way that Sonic Team was pulling from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - a game I consider to be the very best of the past decade - had me thinking / hoping / wishing that this was finally the game that would break the much-discussed “Sonic Cycle.” I had a good feeling about Sonic Frontiers from the moment I saw its announcement trailer at last year’s Game Awards in December 2021.
